Green White
This work examines the role of local plant life in the creation of the Israeli national identity, particularly in the design of national symbols. While following the formation of Israeli national identity, as well as its various social and political processes, an alternate angle, slightly hidden from view, also comes under scrutiny – the encounter between Jewish Zionists and Palestinian Arabs.
‘Green White’ is a series of graphic elements for use in everyday life, each of which invokes critical, social discourse by incorporating local plants (Gundelia, Mallow, Black Calla, Cyclamen and ‘Zaatar’ [bible hyssop]), which have been excluded from mainstream Israeli culture, into a governmental graphic identity – complete with fiscal tender, postage stamps, and more.
