In the Dark

What if we were forced to adapt to life in the dark?
The dark pavilion simulates our darkened reality. Thousands of cones allow a glance into the tale of a city and its inhabitants, plunged into darkness for months and years following damage to its electrical infrastructure. Over time, fear of the unknown makes way for community-led organization of light and energy, creating distinctions of light conditions: day, dark night, and moonlit night. A week later, the residents have supplied everyone with stick-lights. After a month, they have convinced municipal authorities to create illuminating structures in order to light the people’s way, and install cycling infrastructure based on renewable energy. Six months later, the stellar observatory and firefly park are inaugurated. New residents come to the city. The ominous darkness has become familiar, paving the way for new possibilities of life.
This installation is based on a series of projects created in the Architecture Department at the NB School of Design in Haifa University.
