Cloud

Gafni’s balloon collection acts as a floating cloud, carrying lumps of ice beneath it. The cloud effectuates a relationship between air and water, between helium gas and solid ice – each of which are constantly affected by their external surroundings, shifting and altering from one moment to the next.
These balloons normally serve as survey apparatus for the Israeli Meteorological Service*. However, for this work they no longer measure and observe, but rather serve as the object to be measured and observed – frozen water is carried by the balloons, gradually melting and dripping away, creating an independent microclimate.

*Twice every day, meteorologists release large latex balloons out to the stratosphere, equipped with measurement devices and transmitters, wiring information back to the station, never to return.
