Frozen Ötzi's
“The world has but one pair of shoes, the question is: who will wear them, and whose feet shall freeze in the snow. That is all.” (Hanoch Levin, in his play ‘All the Youths’)
The oldest leather shoe ever discovered belonged to Ötzi The Iceman. This shoe provided protection, security and a chance of survival in extreme conditions – all within a simple piece of leather. Similarly to the primitive shoe, modern food packaging for takeaway meals arrive as flat sheets, which are then folded, bended, fit, and threaded in order to pack and protect their contents. Based on Ötzi’s shoe design, this project packs feet using a combination of wet molding technique, 3D printing, paper folding and soft fabrics. The materials for this work are varied and many, all taken from salvaged packaging and given new life as shoes.
