Among the many forms of footraces exists the relatively unknown but very profound field of ‘self-supported ultramarathons’. These races are known for taking place on challenging terrain, in exotic locations, under extreme weather conditions and over tremendous distances. Throughout the race, participants cover distances ranging hundreds of miles, all while carrying their own gear on their backs, with no assistance.
A self-supported runner’s vest becomes their entire world, one that we chose to observe in this exhibition. Such packs contain a racer’s entire store of food, as well as emergency and medical supplies, clothing for any potential weather conditions, and sleeping gear – all weighing between 9-15 kgs.
