‘Ark’ is a contemporary interpretation of the Reifendrehen technique, a traditional German method of sculpting with wood, to create wooden animals for toy arks. While the original ring is engraved in wood in a uniform profile, the new, 3D printed ring combines the profiles of various animals. On the new ark, there are no clearly defined species or pairs; strange, different new types of animals and hybrids are revealed in the hold. This project questions and subverts the biblical dichotomic divisions, while examining the potential in combining traditional techniques with modern tools and materials.
